Brannon Racing Disappointed After ASA Cancells DeSoto Event
by Bill Green, FromBehindTheMIC!
Drew Brannon's father, Bob, has spent years preparing Drew to compete in the very competitive field of professional motorsports. The step from local late model racing into the national stage of a traveling series came in the whirlwind of 2007 for young Drew.
Getting his Fast Kids Truck was a very cool step in the big picture. Stepping to late models last year was a logical progression in the rise toward the top racks of circle track asphalt racing. Even the purchase of an ASA legal chassis was moving things along very fast, even for the 14 year old proven winner.
So, as much as anyone in attendance at DeSoto Super Speedway this past weekend, Drew Brannon was looking forward to the opportunity to run with some of the best in a national late model series. An opportunity for Drew and the team, to prove their ability to work hard, do well under any situation and finish as well as possible.
The Thursday practice had the Brannon Specialties Team hoping to do better in the early Friday practice as Drew was a few tenth's off the pace of the faster ASA regulars. But, Friday brought great results as the day turned to night and qualifying approached.
Drew mustered the best lap possible out of the NEW black #108 machine and was 6th out of the 22 cars taking time. The jubilation of being, that fast soon turned to euphoria, as the #6 pill was drawn, putting the young gun on the pole of his first ever ASA event.
The night was soon to turn into a bad dream, as the ASA assembled the drivers to inform them that due to actions taken by DeSoto officials, the ASA was canceling the event and leaving the track. They requested all the drivers do the same.
The parade of haulers was amazing to say the least. Guys heading back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and all over Florida, exited as requested. DeSoto and the ASA will debate for months to come as to what really happened, but a great race and one young guns opportunity for an experience of a lifetime, were most likely the biggest casualties of their decision.
All the crews hard work over the last few weeks, to prepare this car for this race, was phonominal. They are showing that things are getting better, both inside the car and out.
